Its exceptional teaching enhances students’ critical thinking skills and introduces them to new technologies, evolving theories, and opinions. Consequently, studying in such a setting could be a great investment, but before it as a student, you have to investigate some crucial elements about this country.

UK University System

Undergraduate programs in the universities are usually three years long in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, whereas in Scotland, programs tend to span four years. It is known that the UK is made up of England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. Postgraduate programs are specialized, where you can choose taught master’s with seminars and classes, and research master’s concentrated on your own project. Master’s programs are generally one year long, which offers great value for money and allows you to move on with a career quickly.

Tuition Fees Structure in the UK

The major cost for a student studying at a university in the UK is tuition fees. Tuition fees may vary depending on the programs. For undergraduate programs, international students typically pay between £11,400 and £38,000 annually, whereas at the postgraduate level cost is between £9,000 and £30,000 per year, with the average cost around £20,000. Accommodation is another significant expense. In London, monthly living costs are around £1,483, and outside of London, £1,136 per month.

The UK Academic Year

Generally, the UK academic year commences in late September or early October and finishes in June. Exact dates may differ between universities and programs, but the overall timeline is generally consistent.
During the academic year, there are three main terms such as the Autumn term (September to December), the Spring term (January to April), and the Summer term (from May until late June).
These terms include both several weeks of teaching and a few weeks of holidays or exams:

  • Christmas Break (mid-December to early January)
  • Easter Break (two weeks during spring)
  • Summer Break (the longest break of the year, from June to Late September)
  • Half-term Break (approximately every six to eight weeks during the academic year)
  • Bank Holidays (public holidays in the UK)

Most universities in the UK adhere to a three-term schedule, although there are slight variations among some institutions.

Set up a Bank Account

Set up a Bank Account from home country- before traveling to study in UK, Bangladeshi students are recommended to open up a bank account in their own country in some of the specific Bangladeshi banks for incurring their daily expenses in the UK such as rent, utility bills and any other travel and food expenses without the massive need to get bank transfers done from your home bank. There are certain banks in Bangladesh, such as Standard Chartered Bank, Prime Bank Ltd, Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd (HSBC), Eastern Bank Limited, Citi Bank, Pubali Bank Ltd, National Credit and Commerce Bank Ltd, The City Bank Ltd, and 13 other banks are approved by the UK Government. Some documents are required to open a bank account, as mentioned below–

  • A valid passport
  • Proof of studying in the UK (student ID or a letter from the university)
  • Details of tuition fees and living costs
  • Educational certificates
  • Photograph of the student
  • Refund policy
  • Details of the nominee

Insurance

Get notified about Insurance. There are two types of insurance, such as health insurance and travel insurance, that you should consider as students studying in the UK from your homeland. Do not forget to ask your educational agent to get the following done for you before you arrive in the UK.

Health Insurance

If you are a non-European citizen traveling to study in the UK from Bangladesh, you can still avail full healthcare facilities in the UK. The eligibility for the course you are going to study in the UK requires at least 6 months. To access the National Health Service (NHS) during the study period, international students are obliged to pay an Immigration Healthcare Surcharge (IHS). These IHS fees will be a part of the student visa application, currently set at £776 annually.

Travel Insurance

A few educational consultants, like Career Paths, will strongly recommend purchasing Travel Insurance from Bangladesh, which can be considered as one of the wisest decisions. Travel insurance should cover any issues with your journey to the host country, and these may include lost luggage, flight delays, medical emergencies, personal injury, missed transport or connections, and accidental damage or injury caused by you. The prime reason behind this is to avail medical services from the National Health Service (NHS) on an emergency basis, an unexpected accident or lost luggage, or theft and even unforeseen trip cancellation, compared to Health Insurance, which does not come with these types of facilities for international students during the study period in the UK.

Required Documents

Before you pack your luggage from your home country, don’t forget to take the following crucial documents (both original and photocopies) for both immigration check and student enrolment purposes at the University. These are mainly listed below, which are:

  • Passport
  • Visa confirmation
  • Plane tickets
  • Boarding pass
  • Bank Account Details
  • Health and Travel Insurance
  • Accommodation Contract
  • Qualification Certificates
  • CV

Don’t forget to take all the Important documents with you

Studying in the UK is more than just earning a degree. it’s a life-changing experience. With proper planning, budgeting, and a willingness to embrace new cultures, you can make the most of this incredible opportunity.
